In many homes, mate is drunk with herbs: plants added to the yerba for aroma and a different note of flavor. It’s a long-standing custom in many regions of the country.
A few herbs to start with
- Peperina: fresh, minty aroma.
- Mint: fresh and intense; a little goes a long way.
- Lemon verbena: citrusy, sweet scent.
- Chamomile: mild and floral.
- Orange peel: a citrus touch that goes well with smooth yerbas.
How to add them
You can mix a small amount with the yerba before pouring, or add them on top, next to the bombilla. Start with a little: some herbs are intense and cover the flavor of the yerba.
Loose or in a blend
With loose herbs you make your own combination. A herb blend comes ready to add to your yerba.
If you’re pregnant, take medication or have a health condition, check with a professional before consuming herbs.
